Lessons Learned From Brett Favre
Recently
Brett Favre, the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers,
broke the all-time NFL touchdown record. As a fan of
football and Green Bay (I grew up in Wisconsin) I've had
the opportunity to watch Favre over the years, and I
also realized how his career provides some valuable
business-building lessons.
How? Because success is success, whether you've built a
multi-billion dollar company, written a dozen
best-selling novels or are a famous quarterback. Many
of the same mindset and principles are the same no
matter how the success manifests itself. What's nice
about sports is first, it's public (the games are
televised and the players are forever being interviewed
so you can get to know them a little) and second, you
can see things unfold in a short amount of a time. An
entire game is completed in 3 hours, compared to
business where you don't always see success or failure
that fast (although sometimes it feels like it!)
That said, this is the second of a 2-part article where
I'll share a total of 6 principles (both good and bad)
you can learn from Favre to become a more successful
business owner.

Getting
Uncomfortable
With so much emphasis being put on brilliance, you’ve got to consider the
methods that get us there. Focus groups tell us what we knew. One-way lectures
tell us what you know. Sharing aggregates what we all know. Enter the
Unconferences; informal, participative discussions have been gaining traction
lately.

Food
and Drink In a Cup
Emerging technology from South Korean fried chicken chain BBQ Chicken. Popcorn
chicken rides up top; cola chills out below. It's perfect for snacking on the
move, having it all in one hand. It will be an excellent implementation at the
cinemas - having your popcorns and drinks all in one (obviously in a bigger
packaging).

Take-out
The idea of take-out has taken off. The emergent trend of buying online,
picking-up in-store (‘bopi’ for these purposes) was listed as eMarketer’s #7 Key
Online Predictions for 2008 and NearbyNow’s #4. With benefits like bigger
shopping carts and opportunities for web cross-selling, it’s easy to see why
it’s on the ’08 countdown.

The
Uniform Franchise Offering Circular
I started playing golf about 10 years ago and over time have come to love the
game. Golf has a very specific set of rules that define the game and create an
equal playing field. Franchising, too, has a set of rules manifested in a
document called the Uniform Franchise Offering Circular (UFOC).

Creating
a Winning Business Plan
The old adage “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” is especially important
for first time franchisees. Those who understand the benefits of business
planning are more likely to be successful and pro-active to management
decisions, than are those who react to day-to-day operational issues.

Your
Brand: Integrity and Reputation
Your reputation is part of your brand. Keeping agreements and promises sends a
message to others about your integrity, professionally and personally. That
message tells others who you are and what you stand for. We pay less attention
